I saw the 2nd Hobbit movie last night with Monique. I don’t think fantasy movies are usually her bag, but she enthusiastically said she’d see it with me.
We went to the $3 theatre in Pasadena. Usually I think this is an incredible bargain for what you get, but on a Friday night, the room is packed. There were crinkling wrappers and whispering to be heard from every direction. These rooms are peculiarly shaped; surprisingly narrow and tall. In the nosebleeds, the screen was pretty small, but about 20 minutes into the film, I’d forgotten all of that.
Just as the first film did, Desolation of Smaug gripped my attention. If it weren’t for a brimming bladder, I wouldn’t have noticed passing time at all.
For all my praise, I must say this: WHAT WAS THAT ENDING? It did not feel like a cliffhanger. It was as if they simply hacked off the final 20 minutes; as though they suddenly ran out of film or funding.
For this, I am less than pleased. Overall, good film.
